The roofing of your home is important for keeping the outside elements out, and keeping airflow, heating, and cooling in. There are multiple parts that make up your roofing system. This video will explain some of the basics.
The first layer of a high-performance roofing system is a leak barrier. This is a thin roll of protective material that will prevent water that gets under the shingles from getting into your home.
The next layer is roof deck protection. This is an added layer of protection from wind-driven rain that may work its way under the shingles. Older roof deck protection was made of a felt material, but modern fabrics offer much more durability and are longer-lasting.
A metal drip edge and starter strip are then applied to the edges of the roof and around chimneys or pipes where your roof is more vulnerable to leaks. These help to make sure water flows properly off of your roof and into the gutters.
Finally, shingles are added. Asphalt shingles are some of the most reliable materials for roofs, but there are a variety of other materials that can be used. What you choose will be dependent on your budget and the look you want for your home.
